"Creek by Creek" featuring artist Mary Edna Fraser

We are pleased to present the talented artist Mary Edna Fraser at our February program. This should be a captivating presentation combining art and environmental awareness.

The pioneering work of Mary Edna Fraser has been collected and exhibited worldwide. Her silk batiks and oil paintings range from panoramic to plein air. The common thread in her career of four decades is environmental awareness. Her art has supported the efforts of Charleston Waterkeeper, Coastal Conservation League, SC Environmental Law Project, Water Missions International, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club and Environmental Defense Fund. Her blog, Delete Apathy, is a venue for activism, from local to global. NASA recognized Fraser as their Artist of the Year and she was featured demonstrating batik in DC at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. The Verner Award was presented in 2016, South Carolina’s highest honor for an artist. Fraser has lectured internationally in Indonesia, Taiwan, and Australia. Venues such as the National Academy of Sciences, Duke University Museum of Art, and the National Science Foundation have hosted over 100 of the artist’s one-woman exhibitions.

For more information on her work and her fascinating career, please visit her website at maryedna.com.

If you love color, texture, and movement this workshop is for you!

Register for this 2 day workshop - 9:30am until 4:00 pm both days

Entry Fee: $320 (Includes some supplies)

Location: Edisto Civic Center - Hammocks Room - 42 Station Ct, Edisto Island SC

Addren Doss is a master-signature member of Women Artists of the West, Associate Member of American Women Artists, Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America, and founding and charter member of The Piedmont Outdoor Painting Society. Her work can be found in many private and corporate collections across the country and internationally. Addren is also a member of the Edisto Art Guild.

DAY 1: We will be creating small abstract paintings on Arches oil paper using oil and cold wax medium. You will learn to use various scrapers and mark making tools that are not usually found in traditional oil painting as you create a series of small paintings using a limited palette of colors. The morning will be filled with discussions on abstract art as I introduce you to some of my favorite artists. We will talk about composition and various color palettes. I'll introduce you to the tools and how to use them, and give a short demonstration. Then you will start creating your masterpieces with my help as needed.

DAY 2: We will be creating 3 abstract paintings on 12x12" cradled panels using the processes you learned on day one. There will be a short demonstration in the morning then the rest of the day you will be painting on your own with help from Addren.

You do not have to be an oil painter to enjoy and learn from this workshop. If a non oil painter would like to take the workshop I will provide the oil paint for both days for an additional $25.00. I will need to know this in advance.

I Was Born to Be in a Library: Pat Conroy's Great Love of Libraries

"A library could show you everything, if you knew where to look."—Pat Conroy, My Reading Life

The author of "The Prince of Tides," "The Great Santini" and "The Water Is Wide," Pat Conroy (1945–2016) is synonymous with the literature of the Lowcountry. Pat Conroy Literary Center executive director Jonathan Haupt will discuss Conroy’s lifelong love of books and libraries—focusing on the roles public libraries, school libraries, and Pat's own personal library played in his writing life.

Through video and audio clips, photographs, and published and unpublished writings by and about Conroy, this presentation welcomes attendees into the book-filled world of one of America's most beloved writers.

This program also includes an overview of the Pat Conroy Literary Center which honors and continues Conroy’s legacy as writer and educator in his adopted hometown of Beaufort, South Carolina.

Free and open to the public, the program is co-hosted by the Edisto Art Guild and the Edisto Beach Library of the Colleton County Memorial Library, and sponsored by South Carolina Humanities, a not-for-profit organization inspiring, engaging and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature, history, culture and heritage.

About Our Presenter: Jonathan Haupt is the executive director of the nonprofit Conroy Center and the former director of the University of South Carolina Press, where he created the Story River Books fiction imprint with Pat Conroy, named by Garden & Gun magazine as one of "the top ten things to love about the South." Haupt’s book reviews and author interviews have appeared in the Charleston Post and Courier, Lowcountry Weekly, Beaufort Lifestyle, Savannah Morning News’ Beacon magazine, Southern Review of Books, and Southern Writers Magazine’s Suite T blog. He is co-editor of the anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy, the recipient of seventeen book awards. He serves on the boards of the Friends of South Carolina Libraries and the South Carolina Academy of Authors. In 2020, Haupt was recognized with the Doug Marlette Literacy Leadership Award presented by the Pulpwood Queens, the largest book club in the U.S.
